How to choose a bouquet they'll actually love

Most bouquet regret comes from guessing. Here's the five-minute version of what we ask customers in the studio — answer these and you can't go far wrong.

Start with the person, not the petals

The best orders we get begin with two sentences about the recipient: 'She hates fussy things' or 'He'll want something for the office that doesn't wilt by Friday'. That's more useful than any flower list.

Think about where it'll live. A dramatic armful looks incredible for about an hour — then it needs a vase tall enough to hold it. For hospital wards and office desks, compact and low-scent beats spectacular every time.

If you're stuck between 'safe' and 'memorable', go memorable. People remember the bouquet that looked like it was made for them, not the one that was technically correct. Our birthday bouquets start from exactly that brief.

Colour does more work than variety

You don't need to know that ranunculus are in season — you need to know she's a burnt-orange person. Palette is the single biggest lever in a bouquet's impact:

Palette shorthand that works

  • Warm and loud — terracotta, coral, orange — reads as joy and energy.
  • Soft pastels read as tenderness — new babies, quiet apologies, thank-yous.
  • White and green reads as calm and respect — sympathy, formal gestures.
  • Deep jewel tones read as drama and romance.
  • 'No wrong answer' option: florist's pick, freshest of the day.

Nobody has ever been disappointed by a bouquet that clearly considered them. Plenty have been underwhelmed by an expensive one that didn't.

Size honestly

Budget beats bravado. A $65 bunch built well looks better than a $180 one padded out with filler. Tell us the real budget and we'll tell you what it buys — sometimes that's a smaller bunch of better stems, and it photographs the same.

And if the occasion is big but the budget isn't — say so. We've built plenty of 'modest but perfect' bouquets, and the recipient never knows the difference. Only that you called a local studio instead of an app.

Take-home

The five questions we ask

Steal our consult checklist — it works for any florist, anywhere:

  • Who's it for, and what are they like?
  • Where will the flowers live — home, office, hospital?
  • Their favourite colour (or one they hate)?
  • Real budget — not the impressive number.
  • When does it need to land, and is a card going with it?
